The two brothers Charles Antoine and François Ulysse founded in 1833 the Jaeger LeCoultre Watches Company. They established the company in Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.  But Charles Antoine Lecoultre was a brilliant craftsman. Thus, he invested all of his energy into developing new manufacturing processes and also production methods. In 1844, the Millionometer made it possible for the first time to measure mechanical components to the thousandth of a millimeter. Moreover, the crown winding mechanism, developed in 1847, dispenses with the winding key then required by all other watches. At the 1st World Exhibition in London, Jaeger LeCoultre won its first gold medal with a pocket chronograph, thanks to this new invention.

By the turn of the century, Jaeger LeCoultre was the leading manufacture of the Vallée de Joux. The company’s leading position was due to their masterpieces of watchmaking. Back in 1903, Jaeger Lecoultre launched the flattest watch movements in the world. This mechanical movement was only 1.38mm height. Also, it possesses a chronograph movement with a 2.8 mm height and a 3.2mm height repeater. But, in 1929 Jaeger Lecoultre launched the smallest watch in the world. With its 74 parts and also a 0.9 grams weight it becomes the lightest wristwatch in the world.

The Reverso and further watch classics

Introduced in 1931, the Reverso entered the market with a flip-over case and art déco design. Today, the Reverso line amounts to approximately 40% of Jaeger LeCoultre’s production, with many variations introduced.
