Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Co-Axial Chronometer GMT Watch

In the first place, in 2013 Omega introduced the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m GMT Watch, its first Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch with a second-time-zone. As a matter of fact, eight years passed after Omega introduced its New Seamaster Planet Ocean Collection. As described by many yet, this one could be the perfect traveler watch as it possesses the additional function of the second time zone – obviously a feature that comes in handy while we are traveling. In the same time, Omega introduced also into this watch the Master Co-Axial Movement, with its marvelous anti-magnetic properties, too highlight for sure its new nice design. Nevertheless, Omega Planet Ocean 600M GMT it is a good-looking watch.

Let’s talk a little bit about its features:

The case

With its large 43.5 mm diameter and its 17.04 mm case thickness, this watch can be considered a little pretty hefty comparing with a normal watch. Comparatively, with the last versions, its case thickness has been reduced from 17.25 mm on the old Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m GMT, to 17.04 mm on the new model. At the same time, Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT comes with a different size: First comes the 43.5 mm case model.

Then its followed by the two Planet Ocean models with their 42 mm or 45.5 mm cases and of course by the new edition with a Co-Axial Movement which comes with its 43.5 mm case. The watch has most of the diving watch features, such as a helium escape valve (a feature useful only for professional divers). It comes also with a 600 m water resistance, with a screw-down crown and the diver extension with its bracelet.

Although, this watch its not a 100% diver’s watch. Even though, it’s water-resistant to 600 meters and also its helium escape valve recommends it as a diver watch.

THE BEZEL

In fact, this watch comes also with a bi-directional bezel so that it’s easier to adjust for use with the 24-hour GMT hand. Although, this black and white bezel features numerals and also scaling in contrasting colors. The bezel comes made from ceramic ZrO2.  We also should take into consideration that a diver’s watch always possesses a uni-directional rotating bezel to ensure that the diver can never accidentally decrease the displayed dive time.

On the other hand, this watch bezel comes also marked with a 24-hour scale instead of the 60-minute scale that you would need to see elapsed dive time. But, this bezel comes mounted on the 43.5 mm stainless steel case and represents also the world’s first polished bi-ceramic black and white bezel. Moreover, the numerals and also scaling comes delivered in contrasting colors to separate night from day.

The Movement

Nevertheless, this new Seamster Planet Ocean GMT  comes also with another big novelty which is not about cosmetics, but about its inside.  In fact, Omega first introduced this escapement, used also in the Master Co-Axial movements, in early 2013. But the 2014 watches – from the same collection – comes also with these movements. “Under the hood” this watch possesses a powerful self-winding (automatic) –  Omega caliber 8906.  In the first place, this movement runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour (3.5 Hertz) and also provides a power reserve for up to 60 hours.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Co-Axial Chronometer GMT Watch – Caliber 8906

Also, as an example, most modern watch movements runs at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. But there are some timepieces which run at a higher speed of 36,000 and some at a lower speed of 18,000 or 21,600 vibrations per hour. The Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8906 runs at a frequency of 25’200 vph (3.5Hz). But, according to Omega, this is the best speed for its co-axial movement. Furthermore, the movement features also an Omega’s Si14 silicon balance spring that improves resistance to shock and magnetism and thus to sustained reliability. Not to mention, that this movement also features Omega’s Co-Axial Escapement.

In fact, this escapement contributes to its greater precision, stability, and also durability. The Co-Axial escapement generates less friction and also reduces the necessity of lubrication, thus it reduces the time intervals required between servicing. Moreover, this movement comes also COSC certified, guaranteeing a precision of max deviation -4/+6 seconds per day. Although, the rotor and also the visible bridges comes decorated with a unique “arabesque” wave design finish.

METAS Certification

Of course, this watch comes also METAS certified. METAS tests any watch for eight parameters including resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. Moreover, it tests also its precision which must present a maximum deviation of 0/+5 seconds per day. METAS Master Chronometer certification is an independent and external certification organism, open to all watch manufacturers not just Omega.

Another key point, these movements are completely anti-magnetic, meaning that comes resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss. Additionally, measures the performance of the watch in daily wearing conditions.

The process also ensures that the watch and its movement function properly when exposed to magnetic fields of 15,000 gausses. The movement can be seen through the watch Sapphire Crystal Exhibition Case Back.
