Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II Watch Review

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II is the perfect example of the Rolex way – step-by-step modifications to an existing model, improving functionality coupled with a nice and fresh appearance.

Overall, the 2017 Rolex Yacht-Master II doesn’t present itself as a new watch.

Since its launch, this Big & Bold watch divided the watch community like no other Rolex watch. You like it or Not, their is no in between.

But like all the other Rolex professional watches, was born out of a professional need – The Skipper of a Yacht.

For this reason, this is the Regatta Countdown Flyback Chronograph from Rolex

Although, with a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock, a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock and new hour and minute hands that are visibly different comparing with its predecessor, this watch makes a difference.

Not to mention the bezel of this watch with its huge numbers and the watch name on it, just to be sure that you face a Rolex Yacht Master II.

Thus, it essence, this is an extraordinary watch.  And that’s because of the Rolex designers which matched it to its function: timing the countdown to the start of a regatta.

A regatta countdown timer is a watch with a countdown function showing time remaining, intended for boat racing.

Therefore, Regatta watches allow competitors to position their boat close to the starting point of a race without being penalized by crossing the line. The countdown is typically displayed using different colors or with special hands or sub-dials.

In fact, most regatta timers start at ten minutes since this is customary in boat racing. Some also include additional shorter timers as the start approaches.

So, a regatta is complicated because the actual start time is decided aboard the jury boat, according to the weather, the presence of oil tankers entering or leaving the harbour, whether the buoys have been positioned or not.

Based on the success of the Yacht-Master, Rolex unveiled the Yacht-Master II in 2007.

This is a true professional yachting watch incorporating a flyback chronograph and a programmable countdown timer.

At that time, Rolex launched two models: a Yellow Gold Ref. 116688 and a White Gold Ref . 116689.

Both are professional regatta watches and equipped with the new manufacture caliber 4160.

This new movement derived from the new in-house caliber 4130 used in the Daytona Cosmograph.

In fact, to the 4130 base, Rolex added additional features to make the 4160 the first watch in the world to be equipped with a programmable countdown function from 1 to 10 minutes with a mechanical memory.

The case

This watch possess a standard Rolex Oyster case, but much larger with a 44 mm case diameter.

Case material: Stainless Steel Ref. 116680, Yellow Gold Ref. 116688 White Gold Ref . 116689 and Stainless Steel & Yellow Gold Ref. 116681.

The case is water resistant to 100m, and is equipped with a Triplock crown.

Interesting also is that the pushers for the chronograph do not screw down, despite the Triplock capabilities of the crown. But this is not a real concern for a 10 ATM water resistance.

Additionally, the Rolex Yacht-Master II contains Rolex’s automatic Caliber 4161, a column-wheel chronograph movement that has been certified as a chronometer by the Swiss testing agency COSC.

Moreover, the oscillator at the heart of the watch has boasts another Rolex-exclusive development, a blue hairspring made of Parachrom – an patented alloy that Rolex claims – which makes the hairspring more resistant to magnetic fields, more stable when exposed to temperature variations, and more capable than a traditional hairspring of maintaining the watch’s timekeeping precision in case of shocks.

Accordingly, the solid-link, steel Oyster bracelet is fitted with Rolex’s hallmark Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, and features the Rolex-patented Easylink comfort-extension system that allows the wearer to easily increase the bracelet’s length by about five millimeters.

The stainless steel version of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is priced around $18,500, white gold version at around $48,000, Yellow Gold version around $43,500 and Stainless Steel with Yellow Gold around $25,200.
